🥖 My First French Dish

It was one of those cold Parisian winter days — the kind where the damp wind cuts right through your coat and your bones. I had gone to Montmartre. The Sacré-Cœur stood proud and white at the top of the hill, and after two hours of wandering through the basilica and the charming alleys of Montmartre, I was starving.

I was looking for somewhere cozy and inviting when a small restaurant caught my eye — one of those tiny, warm places you can only find tucked into the heart of Paris. I stepped in, and a young waiter greeted me with a smile and showed me to the only free table. The restaurant was small and intimate, with only a few tables — all occupied except mine.

He took my coat and handed me the menu. He was handsome and spoke English very well, which put me at ease. I opened the menu, nervous. This was my first time alone in a real French restaurant, and my French skills were barely above zero.

The menu was a mystery:

Names I’d heard, perhaps, but never tasted.

I glanced around at other tables. On a few plates, I noticed something brown and glistening — what looked like a duck leg. I had no idea what it was, but I took a leap and ordered:
“Confit de Canard, please.”

The waiter asked if I’d like something to drink.
“A glass of red wine,” I said.
“Which one?” he asked.
When I hesitated, he smiled and said,
“Do you trust me?”
“Yes,” I smiled back.

Perfect. Don’t worry,” he said.

A few minutes later, the dish arrived: a perfectly browned duck leg, crispy on the outside, with golden homemade fries and a few sprigs of fresh arugula. A glass of red wine sat beside it, along with a basket of fresh bread and a carafe of water — a must on every French table.

The duck looked rich — slightly oily — but smelled incredible, and the steam rising from the plate was enough to melt my doubts. The first bite surprised me: the meat was tender, not gamey at all, and full of flavor. The wine paired beautifully — smooth, light, and balanced.

For dessert, I ordered a Crème Brûlée, with a small coffee. The crunchy sugar top, the creamy vanilla inside… it was perfect. A truly comforting experience after a cold, long walk.

I paid the bill, left a tip for the kind young man with the warm smile and the classic French cap, and took a look at the name of the restaurant before leaving — something to remember for next time.

Later, when I told this story to a friend, she burst out laughing and said:
“Only you could stumble into a place like that! That little old restaurant in Montmartre is famous for its delicious “Confit de Canard and Crème Brûlée!”
